1 John Devotional – Day Two

From the City Church Sermon Series - Love Displayed - Week 3 - Love for All

1 John 2:15-17 (NIV)

15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. 16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. 17 The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.

Life that never ends

It is easy to get wrapped up in so many things that take us away from God. These things that distract us may not even be evil, wicked, or considered sinful in and of themselves. What makes them lead us away from God, is the amount of attention and detail we give them. Whether it’s your career, your hobby, your favorite sport or something sinful, such as an addiction, an inappropriate relationship, or coveting of something that is beyond your means, all these things begin to represent something you love.

Defining love can be difficult. But one thing we can be certain of, if we love something, we will give time and resources to it. John tells us not to love the world. He reminds us that anything we are chasing after that is taking precedence over God will pass away. That career that you are chasing and is making God an afterthought will one day be gone. You will replace that you worked so hard to obtain. That addiction that you continue to feed will one day destroy you and cause you to lose your family.

...if we love something, we will give time and resources to it.

John tells us that we can have a life that never ends. If we want to live a life that leads us to eternal life and is impacting people positively long after we are no longer in this world we should love God and love His will for our lives. When the things we do center around God, they are no longer empty and meaningless. Now they become resources and tools God gives us to live for Him and to bless those around us.

Lord, I confess there are things in my life that I have put before you. I ask you to convict me when I become distracted and fall more in love with things of the world. May my love for you and your will grow each day. Soften my heart and open my heart to hear your Holy Spirit lead me and guide me. In Jesus name, amen.
