1 John Devotional – Day Three
From the City Church Sermon Series - Love Displayed - Week 3 - Love for All
1 John 3:16-18
16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17 If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.
LOVE FOR ALL
John records that Jesus gave us a new command:
In 1 John 3:16, John refers back to the command Jesus left us. As believers, we are to love one another as Jesus has loved us. The standard against which we measure the love we have for one another is the love that Jesus demonstrated to us.
How did Jesus show His love towards us?
- He did it by being sacrificial in His love.
- He gave of himself, by preaching the truth and calling out sin all the while showing compassion.
- The criticism, the sideway looks, nor the death threats would not stop him from showing His love towards us.
- He gave of himself all the way to death.
Jesus was practical in His love. Our love for another, our love for all, should be practical. When we see a need in our brother or sister’s life, we should give a helping hand. By definition, the only qualification required for someone to be my brother or my sister is that they do the will of God (Matt. 12:50). There is no qualification on race, color, height, weight, or gender. In God’s kingdom, we are all accepted by Him when we put our faith in Him. As fellow believers, we should always care for one another.
Caring for one another is important because Jesus said that the world would know us by the love we have for each other (John 13:5). What can you do to love your brother or your sister this week? How can you practically fill a need in someone’s life?
Father, open my eyes to the needs of my brother and sister around me. Give me opportunities to show my love towards others and just as you have loved me help me love also. In Jesus name, amen.
